SPORTING HIGHLIGHTS 2007/2008

MOUNT ST MARY'S BUSA SUCCESS - MARCH 2008

After a year of planning and anticipation Mount St Mary’s hosted the BUSA finals for Lacrosse and Rugby League on Thursday 13th March.

Mark Brian Head of BUSA Sports Programmes stated: “It is the first time that lacrosse and rugby league have been hosted together we found the venue at Mount St Mary’s exceptional; staff and volunteers were first class. Feedback from the competitors confirms that it was an extremely enjoyable day and an impressive event.”

Paul Scott, Director of Sport at the College said: “It has been a pleasure to work with BUSA and Fasttrack in hosting the games. It was a great opportunity for the college not only to bring first class university sport to its outstanding facilities but also to provide top quality sporting entertainment to pupils, staff and the community.”

The British University Championships is a new major sporting event which brought together 5,000 university students to compete in the UK's biggest annual multi-sports event. The four-day championship took place across 11 venues in the city and featured 20 sports across a combination of team finals and individual championships.

Full details of these and all other events can be found on the BUSA website - www.busa.org.uk

OLYMPIC RECOGNITION FOR MOUNT ST MARY'S

The London Organising Committee recently announced that a record number of sporting facilities across every part of the UK are to feature in their Pre-Games Training Camp Guide.

The assessment process involved an audit of high quality facilities country wide and has shown that there are many excellent sporting facilities available throughout the UK.

Mount St Mary’s College will feature in the guide as a potential venue for athletics and archery training. This is a proud achievement for the College as over 600 facilities (51 of these are in the Yorkshire region, with 21 being in South Yorkshire) will appear in the Guide, to be published at the Beijing Games and which will contain high quality elite sporting facilities right across the UK.  This will give teams and individual athletes a great selection of venues from which they can choose to prepare for the London Olympic and Paralympic Games.

The Guide will be circulated to all National Olympic and Paralympic Committees to enable them to decide where they base themselves or where to send individual athletes to prepare and acclimatise for London 2012.

The college is accustomed to hosting national teams and training camps, already frequent visitors include GB Rugby League academy, Scottish Exiles academy and UK athletics training camps.  The investment made in sports facilities over the last 2 years, which includes a new pavilion and Grade I Athletics stadium, has increased Mount St Mary’s profile as a major sports venue of excellence.  This has recently led to the successful hosting of the British University Championships for Lacrosse and Rugby League.

From L-R: Laurence McKell, Headmaster, Sir Norman Adsetts, Chairman of the Governors, Paul Scott, Director of Sport

Paul Scott, Director of Sport at the College stated,”It is a very exciting time at the college with further investment planned in the form of a major events hall.  The college has guest accommodation available all year round and this, together with the outstanding facilities, makes the college an attractive venue for any National Olympic Committee.”
