Pastoral care at Mount St Mary's
Mount St Mary's College is proud of the pastoral care it offers pupils, and this was noted as a particular strength of the school in the most recent ISC Inspection. Because teaching and tutor groups are small, staff are able to get to know their pupils very well and give them the attention they need.
Upper, Middle and Lower School
The school is divided into three sections, the Upper school, the Middle school and the Lower school, each with its own Head of school. The Head of each section has responsibility for a team of tutors in that section and has responsibility in general for the academic progress and pastoral well being of all pupils, boarding and day.
Tutors
Each pupil belongs to a small tutor group or form. The form tutor has immediate overall responsibility for academic progress and the pastoral well being of each student. There is an amount of tutor time each week, in which tutors can monitor progress and deal with any problems that might arise. The form tutor is also the first point of contact for parents. There is also one lesson per week in which the school's personal, social and health education programme takes place, led by the form tutors. Heads of School meet with all their form tutors each week, in order to discuss areas of common concern and the Heads of School in turn meet with the Deputy Headmaster and Headmaster on a weekly basis.
Facilities
Every pupil in the Lower and Middle schools has a form room in which there is a locker for books and other personal possessions and there are Lower, Middle, Syntax (Yr11)and Upper school Common Rooms where day and boarding pupils can mix. In addition there are separate changing facilities and lockers are provided for sportswear.
The Chaplaincy
The school has a lay chaplain who is resident and available to all members of the school community who may wish to see him. Two Jesuit priests, Father Michael Beattie SJ and Father Peter Knott SJ, are also resident and available for all pupils and staff. You can learn more about the spiritual life of the school by clicking on the Spiritual link.
The School Counsellor
Certain members of staff are designated Counsellors who pupils may approach. In certain circumstances the school arranges for an external counsellor to visit.
