Mount St Mary's
Master-in-charge of rugby - Mr R Wareham (email - rwareham@msmcollege.com )
Mount St Mary's has long been renowned for our excellence in rugby, which is the major boys' sport in the Autumn and Spring terms.Throughout the last twenty years the College has achieved notable performances on the rugby field. This includes reaching two Daily Mail Cup finals in 92 and 94, winning in 1994. This high standard has been maintained with the 1st XV regularly reaching the last 16.
There have been some exceptional individual performances and this has resulted in a proud record of 23 schoolboy internationals since 1990, including two England 18 group captains.
The quality of coaching at the College is exceptional. A number of teachers have coached and played professionally at Premiership, and National One level at both rugby union and rugby league. Richard Wareham currently coaches England 16 group and David Griffiths, who works with Super League and National League teams, is currently coaching Celtic Nations and Leeds University teams.
On Saturdays the boys represent the College in one of its nine rugby teams against some of the best schoolboy rugby schools in the north and midlands. The recently opened new floodlit 1st XV pitch is an illustration of the professional all inclusive approach to teaching and coaching of rugby at the college.
